רדפילד אומר כי מחלת שפעת העופות היא בעלת שיעור תמותה גבוה כשהיא עוברת לבני אדם — בין 25% ל-50%.
לדברי הרופא הוא "פחות מודאג מכך שזה יקרה בשל זליגה ואבולוציה בבעלי חיים". אלא "חושש הרבה יותר מכך שזה יקרה במעבדה בעקבות מחקר בשינוי תפקוד הנגיף (Gain of Function)".
